Mission Overview
International Medical Relief is returning to the Philippines for a humanitarian medical mission serving remote communities on the island of Bohol, an island province in the Central Visayas region.
The Philippines has a well-developed healthcare system in many areas, but access and quality can vary considerably between urban and rural communities. Remote island villages can face particular difficulty accessing healthcare professionals, medical equipment, preventive services, and health education.
Through a special invitation from Philippine hosts and partners, IMR will bring its team into communities where access to healthcare remains limited. The mission will combine direct patient care, dental services, community health education, and collaboration with local healthcare professionals and public officials.

The Need
The Philippines consists of thousands of islands, creating significant logistical challenges in delivering consistent healthcare to remote communities.
Although healthcare in the Philippines can be of a high standard, there are substantial differences in access to and availability of services between rural and urban populations. The decentralized healthcare system also places considerable responsibility for healthcare delivery and public-health initiatives at the local level.
As a result, economically vulnerable and geographically isolated populations can have difficulty obtaining reliable medical care, dental care, health education, medications, and medical equipment.
IMR has been specifically invited to serve remote island communities that have difficulty accessing healthcare. Local hosts have also identified a particular need for dental and dental hygiene services during this mission.
Our Work
International Medical Relief began working in the Philippines in 2014, initially providing emergency disaster relief following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.
Since then, IMR has developed an ongoing relationship with communities and healthcare partners throughout the country. IMR reports having served nearly 10,000 patients with the support of nearly 300 volunteers and staff.
Its work in the Philippines includes:
- Medical treatment
- Dental services
- Community health training
- Preventive-health education
- Clinic operations
- Clinic supplies
- Collaboration with local healthcare professionals
- Outreach to rural and remote villages
IMR's work also supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 - Good Health & Wellbeing and Goal 17 - Partnerships for the Goals, with an emphasis on working shoulder-to-shoulder with local partners.
This Mission
The 2027 team will travel to Bohol, an island province in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines.
IMR plans to reach communities in Bohol where patients face significant barriers to healthcare and health education. The organization will work with its in-country hosts and partners to identify communities with the greatest need.
A central part of the experience will be working alongside local healthcare providers, community leaders, and public officials who are actively working to improve healthcare access and health literacy for their communities.
The mission is designed to support--not replace--the work of local healthcare professionals by combining direct care with education, collaboration, and community partnership.
Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will depend on each volunteer's professional credentials, experience, IMR's mission needs, and the scope authorized by IMR and its local partners.
Medical volunteers may assist with patient assessments, primary and preventive care, treatment of appropriate acute and chronic conditions, patient education, and other services within their professional scope.
Dentists and dental hygienists are particularly needed for this mission and may provide appropriate dental assessment, treatment, preventive services, oral-health education, and other care as authorized by IMR.
Other volunteers may support patient education, clinic flow, logistics, community-health activities, and other mission needs.
All healthcare professionals must practice only within their credentials and the scope authorized by IMR and applicable local requirements.
Sustainable Impact
IMR's work in the Philippines extends beyond an individual week of clinical care.
By returning to the country and developing long-term relationships with local hosts, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, IMR seeks to support both immediate patient needs and longer-term improvements in healthcare access, health literacy, and community health.
Volunteers work alongside local professionals and officials who understand the communities they serve, helping reinforce sustainable local healthcare efforts.
Lodging & Transportation
Volunteers will stay in a comfortable hotel in Bohol, providing a convenient base for the week's mission activities.
The location also provides opportunities outside of clinic to experience Bohol's culture and natural attractions, including the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Conservation Area, Loboc River, white-sand beaches, and Baclayon Church.
Participants should confirm final transportation arrangements, airport transfers, meals, airfare, insurance, and other inclusions directly with IMR before travel.

Experience Bohol
Bohol offers volunteers the opportunity to combine humanitarian service with exposure to one of the Philippines' distinctive island communities.
Outside clinic hours, volunteers may have opportunities to experience the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Conservation Area, Loboc River, historic Baclayon Church, local communities, and Bohol's beaches and coastal environment.
The experience is intended to provide not only an opportunity to serve patients but also meaningful interaction with the healthcare professionals, public officials, community leaders, and residents working to improve health in the region.
Optional Trip Extension
Volunteers interested in remaining in the Philippines after the mission may have opportunities to arrange additional travel through IMR's travel partner.
Potential experiences include:
- Puerto Princesa on Palawan Island
- Subterranean River National Park
- Island exploration throughout Honda Bay
- White-sand beaches and coastal activities
- Additional cultural and outdoor experiences
Any extension is separate from the primary medical mission.
Mission Contribution
The Philippines Classic mission is advertised at an Early Bird price of $1,700 for volunteers who register by 12/21/2026, representing a $200 savings from the regular mission contribution.
This is an unpaid volunteer humanitarian mission, not a paid locum tenens or healthcare assignment.
The mission contribution supports IMR's ongoing relief and capacity-building activities. Volunteers should confirm directly with IMR exactly what is included and any additional expenses for airfare, meals, insurance, vaccinations, personal expenses, optional excursions, or extensions.
Important HPA Healthcare Notice
HPA Healthcare is sharing this opportunity with our healthcare practitioner network for individuals interested in international humanitarian service.
HPA Healthcare is not the sponsor, organizer, operator, employer, staffing agency, or administrator of this mission. The mission is organized and administered by International Medical Relief.
Participation is entirely voluntary and independent of any employment, independent-contractor, locum tenens, or other professional relationship with HPA Healthcare. Participation or non-participation will not affect eligibility for HPA Healthcare assignments.
International Medical Relief and its local partners determine volunteer eligibility, credentialing requirements, permitted clinical activities, scope of practice, mission fees, travel requirements, lodging, transportation, insurance, safety protocols, and all other mission operations.
Healthcare professionals should not assume that malpractice or other insurance associated with an HPA Healthcare assignment applies to international volunteer activities. Participants should confirm directly with IMR what professional liability, travel medical, emergency evacuation, and other insurance coverage is provided or required for this specific mission.
