The mission will bring volunteers together with local healthcare professionals and community partners to provide medical, dental, preventive-health, and educational services in schools and community centers.

This is a short-format Signature Mini mission, making it an excellent opportunity for healthcare professionals who want to participate in international humanitarian work but may not be able to commit to a longer trip.

The Need

The Santa Cruz region faces substantial healthcare-access challenges, particularly in rural communities such as La Guardia, San Carlos, and Santa Rosa. IMR reports that some communities have only approximately one general-practice physician for every 3,200 residents.

Communities also face a combination of chronic and infectious diseases. IMR identifies cervical, prostate and breast cancers among important health concerns and notes the prevalence of illnesses including Chagas disease, malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. Maternal and child health is another area of concern, including congenital Chagas disease.

Limited medical personnel, medicines, hospital beds, sanitation, transportation and access to clean water further affect the region's ability to meet community healthcare needs.

Our Work

IMR has been asked to conduct day clinics in schools and community centers, with an emphasis on preventive healthcare, early identification of common health conditions, treatment, and education.

Education is a central component of the mission. Volunteers will work alongside local caregivers, clinicians, nurses and educators to share practical information about preventive care, healthy lifestyles and caring for family members.

The mission also seeks to strengthen the local healthcare system by engaging and training local healthcare professionals rather than focusing solely on short-term care.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities

Specific duties will depend upon each volunteer's credentials, experience, IMR's needs, and the scope of practice authorized for the mission.

Healthcare volunteers may assist with patient assessments, preventive care, treatment of common conditions, patient education, medical or dental services appropriate to their credentials, and collaboration with local clinicians.

Volunteers with teaching experience may have opportunities to help educate local healthcare professionals and community members on preventive care, wellness and healthy lifestyles.

Non-medical volunteers are also welcomed by IMR and may assist with clinic flow, patient support, education, logistics and other mission activities as assigned.

All volunteers must remain within the role and scope authorized by IMR and applicable local requirements.

Community Health & Sustainable Impact

IMR's approach emphasizes sustainable impact rather than providing isolated episodes of care.

Community engagement is an important part of the mission, including working with indigenous populations and helping provide culturally appropriate health education and services.

IMR connects its work with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health & Wellbeing, Clean Water & Sanitation, and Partnerships for the Goals. IMR states that its teams work at the invitation of and in collaboration with local hosts.

Lodging & Transportation

Volunteers participating in the Signature mission will stay in 3+ star hotel accommodations with amenities intended to provide a comfortable stay in Bolivia.

IMR will arrange safe and reliable transportation to and from clinic locations.

Participants should review IMR's final trip materials for airport transfers, meals, airfare, travel insurance, required vaccinations and other expenses or arrangements that may not be included in the mission contribution.

Mission Contribution

The mission is listed as starting at $1,500.

This is a volunteer humanitarian mission, not a paid locum tenens assignment. The mission contribution supports IMR's broader relief and capacity-building efforts serving underserved and vulnerable communities.

Any mission fees, deposits, cancellation policies, airfare, meals, insurance, vaccinations, personal expenses, or other costs should be confirmed directly with IMR before registration.

Important HPA Healthcare Notice

HPA Healthcare is sharing this opportunity with our healthcare practitioner network for those interested in international humanitarian service.

HPA Healthcare is not the sponsor, organizer, operator, employer, staffing agency, or administrator of this mission. The mission is organized and administered by International Medical Relief.

Participation is completely voluntary and independent of any employment, independent-contractor, locum tenens, or other professional relationship with HPA Healthcare. Participation or non-participation will not affect eligibility for HPA Healthcare assignments.

IMR and its local partners determine volunteer eligibility, credentialing requirements, scope of practice, clinical responsibilities, mission fees, travel requirements, lodging, transportation, insurance, safety protocols and all other mission operations.

Healthcare professionals should not assume that malpractice or other insurance associated with an HPA Healthcare assignment extends to international volunteer activities. Volunteers should confirm directly with IMR what professional liability, travel medical, emergency evacuation and other insurance is provided or required for this mission.

About Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is Bolivia's largest metropolitan area and combines a vibrant urban center with surrounding rural communities. The region has a diverse population and offers volunteers an opportunity to experience Bolivian culture while serving communities with significant healthcare needs.

Volunteers who extend their travel may also choose to explore destinations such as Salar de Uyuni, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Sucre, Tiwanaku, Madidi National Park, or the Amazon Basin after completing the mission.
